A practical guide to laundry day
From the first pocket check to the last folded towel.
1. Sort by care instructions
Read garment labels before choosing a cycle. Separate items that need different washing temperatures or handling. Keep new dark colors away from light clothing when color transfer is a concern, and put delicate items in an appropriate laundry bag if their instructions allow machine washing.
2. Check pockets and stains
Remove tissues, coins, and other objects. Identify stains before washing and follow both the fabric label and pretreatment product instructions. Test a suitable product on an inconspicuous area when needed. Do not mix cleaning products.
3. Pack for the laundromat
- Sorted loads in easy-to-carry bags.
- Detergent suited to the machine, measured according to its label.
- A clean basket or bag for finished items.
- Payment in a method confirmed with the laundry.
4. Load with space to move
Follow the washer's loading guidance. A tightly stuffed drum can make washing and rinsing less effective. Choose a larger machine or split the load rather than forcing items in. Our washer guide helps with the decision.
5. Inspect before drying
Look for remaining stains before exposing garments to dryer heat. Check tumble-drying instructions and separate fabrics with different drying needs. Use the recommended setting, check progress, and remove items when appropriately dry.
6. Give bedding extra attention
Bulky bedding may feel dry on the outside while still holding moisture within. Follow its label, ensure thorough drying, and let it cool before folding for storage. If the label rules out machine washing or tumble drying, use its recommended method instead.
7. Fold and keep clean loads separate
Fold on a clean surface and use a clean container for the trip home. Keep damp items out of closed bags for extended periods. A repeatable sorting and packing routine can make the next laundry day easier.
